Canoeing

Many people get open canoeing mixed up with kayaking. Lets get it straight!

  • Open canoes are generally large boats capable of carrying more than one person. These are moved with a single bladed (ended) paddle.
  • Kayaks are generally smaller, often are for one person. These are moved with a double bladed paddle.

  • Canoes are associated with native Americans and the lakes and rivers of North America.
  • Kayaks are associated with the Inuit or Eskimo peoples of the Arctic.

At maes y lade, Canoeing usually takes the form of a journey. Most of the time we use the River Wye, but we also use the Brecon & Monmouthshire Canal or the River Usk.

Anybody can canoe, the skills you need are communication, and cooperation. You need to work as a team with the other person or persons in your boat. This is not as easy as you may first think!

As you can see from the pictures, Canoes are not just for flat water, but when conditions are right, they can be used on moving water and rapids... but can you?

Questions?

Q. I can't swim very well. Can I still do it?
A. YES. All canoeists wear bouyancy aids which are similar to life jackets. This means even if you do fall in, you will float.
