About the Centre

Maes y Lade is a converted Welsh Hill farm at the foot of the Black Mountains within the Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales. Part of Essex County Youth Service, we have been providing Outdoor Education courses for over 30 years.

The centre is in easy reach of the River Wye, the Brecon Beacons and limestone areas to the south containing some of the most extensive cave systems in Britain and both natural and quaried climbing areas.

This local environment provides an area of outstanding natural beauty, and means we are able to offer courses of an adventurous and challenging nature.

Accommodation

Following the completion of a substantial modernisation programme, our facilities have been greatly improved. The buildings consist of a purpose built accommodation unit, converted farmhouse, and two further buildings used for equipment storage.

The new building has a total of twenty-one bed spaces on the upper floor, arranged in rooms of between two and six.

The ground floor includes wheelchair accessible accommodation, a spacious new dining room and kitchen as well as showers, laundry and drying room facilities.

The Farmhouse The old farmhouse has been refurbished to include a comfortable common room, a small kitchen and accommodation for up to seventeen people. This affords opportunities for self-catering and small group use or, in conjunction with the new building, for large group bookings, to a total of 36 students.
		Other Facilities One of the most significant additions to the Centre is a fully catered kitchen and spacious dining room. Here you can sit in comfort and enjoy your meal which can be chosen from a range of options. The dining room can also double as a study room which includes TV & video with large screen projector, overhead projector and computers for group use. In the farmhouse, we also have a comfortable lounge, which can be used for discussions and reviews.
Equipment All equipment for you course is provided from our extensive equipment stores. This equipment is subject to regular checks and inspections by our staff. We have a wide range of sizes of boots & waterproofs, so you can be confident we can cater for almost any size from year 5 children to adults.
